The Venerosi Pesciolini family and the Burg of Ghizzano
The origins of the Venerosi Pesciolini Family are very old, their first ancestor dates back to the Carolingian period. The first documented news of Venerosi are from 803 a.C. It is believed that our family settled in Ghizzano towards the end of the 14th century.
Wine and Oil:
Grapes and Olives have been at the heart of our family’s activities and have encompassed the whole of the Estate as it is today. The winery and oli mill are both situated right next to the tower built in 1370 a.C. by our Venerosi Pesciolini ancestors. The ancient country house, today is a residential villa and the headquarter of our company. The Garden of the Villa is a typical Italian Garden, in a style of classic late Renaissance inspiration.

Ginevra Venerosi Pesciolini joined the company in 1995, following the first steps begun by her father,
few years earlier. Today she drives the agronomic and commercial part of the Tenuta di Ghizzano.
The other two daughters of Count Pierfrancesco Venerosi Pesciolini, her sisters, are members of
the current Agricultural Society.
With a lot of work and strong passion, Ginevra creates the actual and modern BIOLOGICAL and BIODYNAMIC FARM, confirming the innovative spirit of the family by generations. She selected and trained her staff, which still follows her with dedication and competence, since the first year. In 1996, she created the Nambrot, today the most prestigious wine, dedicated to the Knight of Carlo Magno, the first ancestor of the Venerosi Pesciolini.
Today we produce about 80.000 bottles a year, unique wines, each with it’s own character: Veneroso, Nambrot, Ghizzano Rosso and Ghizzano Bianco, as well as San Germano
an excellent sweet dessert wine (Passit), and a top quality extra virgin olive oil I.G.P.
In the 1970’s, the vineyards of 12 hectare had just 2500 plants per hectare. Over the years, this has been gradually built up and we now have 18 hectares all replanted as follows: in 1989 with 4.500 plants per hectare, then from 1999 to 2003 with 6.600 plants and finally in 2010 and 2018 with 5.000 plants per hectare.
… THE "VENEROSO": THE GREAT WINE OF OUR ancestor
It was our father Pierfrancesco to really understood the potential of the Tenuta di Ghizzano and
through his products gave an important contribution to the renewal of Italian winemaking.
The bet of the Count Pierfrancesco Venerosi Pesciolini has been to go against the tide. Felt passionately about his land “Terre di PISA”, in the 1980’s started with a production of hight quality wines, in a time when an overproduction of grapes tended to lead to a poor quality wine at ridiculously low prices. Courageously, invested both in the vines and the winery and, with the support of his friend Piermario Meletti Cavallari , started the research of the indigenous Sangiovese's variety and began the production of a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
In 1985 was born VENEROSO our first wine: “serious” , in small quantities but so strong to beat the market with pride! .. in fact and was immediately awarded 2 ‘glasses’ by the Gambero Rosso wine guide! It was named after Veneroso Venerosi who was the first to dedicate his passion to the land and wine-making.
