According to the “Repetti” dictionary, our family arrived in Ghizzano towards the end of the 14th century. Right from the start, vines and olive trees were the heart of activity in the various farms that make up the estate as we know it today. For centuries, everything was produced “traditionally”, observing the safe, solid quality of “things done properly” as locals say. Never daring to be different, never attempting to raise the hurdle.
In the 1980s, farming, and particularly winegrowing, was in terrible difficulty in this area. The excessive production of grapes led to poor quality wine and prices were so pitifully low that they hardly covered production costs. Many of our neighbours uprooted their vineyards and some even ended up selling their estates. It was then that our father Pierfrancesco decided to turn things around and invest in the vineyard and cellar in an attempt to raise quality. His aim was to make a “serious” wine, maybe in small quantities, but capable of taking on the market.
First vinified in 1985, Veneroso is our first bottled wine, named after our ancestor Veneroso Venerosi who was the first member of our family to devote himself body and soul to the countryside. From old vineyards planted in the 1970s, with just 1000 vines per acre, we have gradually expanded to an extension of 50 acres, 85% of which have been replanted: the first batch in 1989, with 1,800 vines/ha, the second between 1999 and 2003, with 2,600 vines, and the latest in 2006, with 2,000 vines.
